Mr. Still Teacher Of The Year Interview
March 20, 2023
Mr. Still: I started out in church music actually, and I loved it. I was invited to lead congregational singing for a Baptist church that I attended with my family when I was a teenager. I just fell in love with the act of singing, the process of studying voice, and so I entered college and joined some phenomenal choral ensembles. As a dedicated and hardworking teacher, Mr. Still has helped his students to grow and develop as musicians and performers. I realize singing is a really intimate personal thing and we’re all on a journey and we have different places along that journey. I had an incredible director who was inspired by fear. Being a part of a choir is an experience that stays with students for a lifetime and this teacher is honored to be a part of that journey. This is my fourteenth year here at SJ. I’ve been teaching music for fifteen or sixteen years. In this choir, students have found a sense of community and belonging, fostering their love of music. Jean Rivera: Mr. Still has helped me with my singing skills by listening when I sing, helping on some errors that I make, and just overall making me more motivated to learn and excel. Mr. Still: I was inspired by what I was involved in and what I did and then eventually the dream of having my own classroom and doing something similar was really a wonderful thing.
