Seventh graders at SJHS skipped school on February 5th and spend a day acting as an adult for Job Shadow Day.  Job Shadow Day is a day where the seventh graders spend a day with someone who has a job and learns about that job.

Ms. Josie Jarvis, CTE teacher at Springville Junior High, said, “Job Shadow Day is really beneficial because students get the opportunity to spend the whole day observing a specific job that they may be interested in. We want students to get thinking about a career path, so they can explore different paths before they head down a certain career path.”

Some students that went on their Job Shadow expedition had an interest in the job. Sarah Muir, a seventh grader who went to a massage clinic with her grandmother, was one of these students who had an interest in the job. “I really enjoyed it, I learned a lot and I’ve wanted to be a massage therapist for a long time,” she explained.

Other students discovered that they had no interest in the job they shadowed. Courtney O’Halloran, another seventh grader, enjoyed her experience at the BYU bookstore, but didn’t have an interest in perusing it as a career. “I had a lot of fun, but I want to be a chemist when I grow up.”

Lots of students at Springville Junior High participated in Job Shadow Day. Ms. Jarvis said that about 98% of her students were gone on Job Shadow Day.

For some students, finding and keeping a job isn’t something they’re particularly concerned about, seeing as their only in seventh grade. But as time goes by, it tends to speed up and the time flies by. Now is the time for students at Springville Junior High to be thinking about a career path they want to take.

One of the most popular classes among seventh graders at SJHS is Career Technical Education (CTE). Ms. Jarvis teaches the Introduction to Business section of CTE. Ms. Jarvis wanted to teach because in high school she was interested in teaching and the business field. She decided to teach business so she could combine the two.

Ms. Jarvis said, “I love teaching because I get to know the students; they are so funny and have great personalities.” Because she teaches also computers, she teaches information that they will use at school and at home, “It is so fun to see them take those skills and use them at home or in other classes.”

Hannah Thorn, a seventh grader, said, “She is super cute and nice; If you get this class you will love it.”  Olivia James, also a seventh-grade student, said “She is so nice; she lets us talk, but not too loud.”  According to Jehni McNeil, an eighth-grade student, she is always fun and she teaches well.

Besides teaching, Ms. Jarvis also enjoys horseback riding. Her family owns fifteen horses that they raise and train. They raise them to become barrel racing horses. In the summer she travels to two to four rodeos a week.

The Best Christmas Presents Ever

Student Life January 15th, 2010

Every Christmas morning, little kids and others who wish they were little kids, wake up early to rush downstairs to see what presents are peeking out from under the Christmas tree.  They tear the wrapping paper off as fast as they can, after all, who cares about the wrapping paper, right?  This would describe everyone who completely loves Christmas and can’t wait to see what they received.  Coming back to school after the Christmas break is when many students compare what they got and what their friends got.  Every year there are certain items that it seems everyone has received for Christmas.

Among Springville Junior High students, some of the most popular gifts this year are iPods, cameras and, as every year, clothes.  According to Jamie Devenish, a seventh grader, her favorite gift this year was an iPod Touch because they have tons of things you can do with them.  Katelynn Marshall, an eighth grader, loves her new iPod touch because she has been “wanting one for a long time!”  According to Cynthia Esklund, another eighth grader, her favorite gift this year was a Nikon digital camera.

Other Christmas gifts aren’t as common, but still well-loved this year for SJHS students, for example, Bailey Cox, an eighth grader received a laptop.  According to her, it was her favorite gift because she can now take her computer wherever she wants.  A seventh grader, Morgan Dunn received a bow and arrow.  He loves it because, as he said, “It makes me feel like a hunter.”  Zoe Baldwin, a seventh grader, loves her new Wii because you “get a workout while playing video games.”

Teachers are big fans of Christmas as well.  Ms. Josie Jarvis, the SJHS Business CTE teacher said, “I love Christmas and always will!  The only thing that has changed is that I am more excited to give my gifts than receive gifts.”  Though she loves to give gifts, according to her, she loved a cute orange purse from Buckle given to her by her mom.  That just shows that at any age, SJHS loves Christmas, along with everyone else.

Ms. Josie Jarvis became a teacher because she didn’t want to be a person that did the same thing everyday. Ms. Jarvis teaches computer technology and computer business to the eighth and ninth graders and Career and Technical Education (CTE) to seventh graders. Her main focus for the seventh graders is on how to use computers.

Ms. Jarvis was born in Payson and grew up in Spanish Fork her whole life. Ms. Jarvis said, “I have a lot of really good life-long friends that grew up with me in Spanish Fork, and a lot of family lives there to.”

Ms. Jarvis went to Salt Lake Community College where she received her Associate Degree. She then went to Weber State University for a year. Then she went to Utah Valley University (UVU) and received her Bachelor’s Degree. She is currently going to Southern Utah University to get her Masters Degree.

Seth Daybell, a seventh grader, said, “I like her class. I like working on the computer, and working in books. The books are easy to read and understand. I like when we are done with our work and can practice typing.”

Weston King, an eight grader, said, “She rocks; it is easy to be in her class.  She isn’t extremely strict.  She is a nice teacher to have. She does fun things with her class.”

Looking towards being a business leader in the future? At SJHS, Ms. Josie Jarvis, the business teacher, is offering a computer business class. As you know, many businesses involve the use of the computer, although the programs may vary. The computer business class is only offered in the second semester.

“Computers in Business is a class that teaches the students all about running a successful business using technology such as computers,” Ms. Jarvis explained. As a class project, each student will open a fictional amusement park. Ms. Jarvis said that they will create a website for the amusement park, hire the staff, make business cards, and so on. The entire semester will be based around the fictional amusement park. In the end, the students will be able to evaluate what went well and what didn’t.

When asked why he wanted to take the class, Ethan Trunnell responded, “I think that the class will help me in the future.” Ms. Jarvis said that these skills really are helpful in later years. The computer business class teaches the students all about financing and lets them get some experience in the business world. It also teaches the students what all business owners do on a daily basis. “This is an exciting class for students who want to explore the business world and want to be an entrepreneur some day,” Ms. Jarvis stated.

English as a Second Language at SJHS

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to speak English as a second language? It is difficult to communicate with the teachers and learn the information presented in class for those students who speak other languages. This year Ms. Josie Jarvis, Mrs. Lise Carpenter and Mr. Trent Mikesell, teachers at Springville Junior High, are taking Teaching English as a Second Language classes at Riverview Elementary School.

The teachers learn a lot of great information at these classes. “We basically are learning how to be better teachers to our ESL students. We are learning how to incorporate language activities into our lessons, so that our students can learn and not have to worry about a language barrier,” Ms. Jarvis, Springville Junior High computer teacher, said.

The teachers who are taking these classes really enjoy taking them. “They are very educational and very meaningful. It is a great opportunity to make myself a better teacher for my ESL students,” Ms. Jarvis explained.

These teachers have worked hard to improve their teaching ability. Great job and keep the good work!

New Computer Teacher at SJHS

Faculty and Staff Spotlight October 10th, 2008

Miss Jarvis

Springville Junior High School has a new TLC, computer technology, and computer business teacher. Her name is Josie Jarvis. Miss Jarvis chose SJHS because she had “heard such great things about this school. I have always wanted to teach junior high, and I also knew that the community support at SJHS was very high, which is really helpful to a new teacher.” Miss Jarvis explained that that faculty, staff and students have been wonderful to work with. “Everyone has been so nice and helpful with any questions I have. SJHS has such an inviting and positive atmosphere that I really enjoy,” Miss Jarvis said.

Something interesting about Miss Jarvis is that on the weekends and during the summer she barrel races. You may ask if its teaching is going to affect her barrel racing but she says “I compete mostly on the weekend and in the summer, so having both of those off makes it a lot easier to make it to all of my competitions.” We are so happy to welcome Miss Jarvis to Springville Junior High!
