Valentine’s Day is a holiday that is celebrated throughout the world. It has never been confirmed as to where this holiday originated, but there are, however, many speculations. The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine that were martyred, but the real origin has never been confirmed.

Springville Junior High school is celebrating Valentines Day this year in a few different ways. The Service Learning class is creating Valentines that students can buy and give to other students. These Valentines will cost one dollar, and the service learning class will deliver them to the appropriate student during the students’ sixth period class.

Springville Junior High is also hosting a school dance for students at Springville Junior High. The dance will be February 11th from 7:00 to 9:00 and will be four dollars without their student I.D. and three with. Students are asked to wear best dress, but still follow the dress code found in the student handbook.

Every year around this time Springville Junior High has their Christmas Dance. This year the dance was on Thursday, December 17, 2009. The Service Learning class made posters for the dance, and the student council decorated. The dance was filled with Christmas lights and Christmas posters to help with the Christmas spirit. The D.J. at the dance played Christmas songs, old songs, and new hip songs.

“The dances at SJHS help support the school with the money the students paid to get in. So everybody should come!” said Sara Ripley, a member of the student council. The people who chaperone the dances are, teachers, parents, and PTA members. Carson Giles said, “ My favorite part of the dance was dancing with the ladies.”

Dancing at the SJHS dances

When you were younger did you ever enjoy going to school dances? Well, Springville Junior High is having dances this year! They have five dances a year. There is the Welcome Back Dance, Halloween Dance, Christmas Dance, Valentine’s Days Dance, and the End of Year Dance. Dances start at 7:00 pm and end at 9:00 pm.

There are four slow dances out of the whole thing. Students don’t have to dance; they can sit on the bleachers during the slow dances. But when the slow dance is over they go back down and dance. The DJ, Audio Visions, has a request sheet so students can go choose the song. The DJ has a wide variety of songs.  There will be supervisors at the dances, like teachers and PTA volunteers.

Katie Bair, ninth-grade student at SJHS, said,” I love the dances. They are so fun.”  If you like hanging out with your friends, the dance is a great place to hang out with them. Jace Hartman, another ninth grade student at SJHS, said, “I love going to the dances. They are such a great place to hang out.”  The next dance will be held on Thursday, October 29th.

Valentine’s Dance at Springville Junior High

Students dancing the night away at the Valentine’s dance.

Love was in the air at Springville Junior High with our Valentine’s dance on February 19, 2009 from seven-nine. Music, friends, fun, boys, girls, and laughter abounded. Teachers and students a like boogied the night away.

If you’re looking for a good time then the dance is the place for you. We asked Elizabeth White, your average, everyday eighth grade student at SJHS and she said, “Yes I think they’re very fun!”

As you can tell, the students enjoy them, but what are the teacher’s perspectives? Mr. David Knudsen, vice principal at Springville Junior said, “I like the dances because it helps students learn to handle a social situation that they will have to deal with in high school and beyond.”

Parents, if you’re worried about the music that they play, do not stress about what goes into your children’s ears. The school has to follow and maintain the rules about the content of the music that is allowed such as the music may not swear, talk about drugs, alcohol etc. The teachers in school supervise the dances and the dancing, and parents are welcome to come and chaperone the dances and maybe even have a good time with your child.

If students are bored and looking for a good time, come to a dance and shake the night away.

There will be a Halloween dance on October 30 at Springville Junior High in the boy’s gym; it will start at 7:00 p.m. and end at 9:00 p.m. The cost of the dance will be $4 without student ID and $3 with student ID. There will be costumes allowed, but students must not wear masks, blood, or any type of gore. There will be spooky decorations, fun costumes, and maybe even a food drive…

There are some consequences for the students that have tardies and sluffs. Mrs. Wimmer, the skill building teacher, said, “If any students have Morning Enrichment time, they need to make it up by the morning before or the morning of the day of the dance, or they will not be able to go.”

Boogie on in to the SJHS Dances

SJHS has many fun possibilities, but one of the most popular events is the dances. The Springville Junior High’s dances are from seven to nine o’clock p.m. They are held at the boy’s gym, and the dance that’s coming up is on October 30th.

The students at SJHS have a lot to say about the dances. Two new seventh graders, Hayde Blanco and Vincent Hutchinson, told me about several things they like and dislike about the dances.

“I get to hang out with friends, and go crazy,” Hayde said. She also said that the dances are fun because of the loud music, and it’s hot in the gym. She just wants to go wild! She wants to change two things about the dances, too. “No slow dances! They should have a free snack bar with drinks and stuff.”

Vincent Hutchison has some likes and dislikes on the dances, too. He said that the dances were fun. “You get to know other people. Like boys talking to girls, and girls talking to boys,” Vincent said that that was one of the things he liked. But he wants to have more time to dance, and a bigger space.

Autumn Hathaway is an eighth grader at SJHS, and she has some things to say about the school dances. She said it would be more fun if people go out and dance and she also said that people complain about the hip hop and rap music.

“I think they’re fun! They are like a big party,” Phoenix Mackley enthused. Phoenix is also an eighth grader, and a big fan of dances. “You get to hang out with all of your friends, and there’s loud music!” But Phoenix also had some dislikes about the dances. She said that there should be a bigger variety of music, and the dances should be on Fridays.

“They’re a lot of fun. I really enjoy/recommend them,” D.J. Barnes, another eighth grader said. “I have so much fun there. Not to mention that my friends and I go around goofing off and having a good time.”

We know that the eighth graders like the dances, but they do have some items on their wish list that they want to change, but what about the ninth graders? “I think that they are awesome because you can go hang out with friends and dance and show off your ‘moves’,” Eric Mageno, a ninth grader said.

When I talked to the administrators about the dances, Principal Rolfe said that he thinks that it’s a great opportunity for kids to get together, and that there are a lot of parents and teachers there for supervision. He feels really good about dances, and they are fun. Mr. Knudsen also added that the dances help kids with sociability. Principal Rolfe also wanted to add that of all the schools that he worked at, dances at SJHS had to be the safest and the best.
