Seventh graders at SJHS skipped school on February 5th and spend a day acting as an adult for Job Shadow Day. Job Shadow Day is a day where the seventh graders spend a day with someone who has a job and learns about that job.

Ms. Josie Jarvis, CTE teacher at Springville Junior High, said, “Job Shadow Day is really beneficial because students get the opportunity to spend the whole day observing a specific job that they may be interested in. We want students to get thinking about a career path, so they can explore different paths before they head down a certain career path.”

Some students that went on their Job Shadow expedition had an interest in the job. Sarah Muir, a seventh grader who went to a massage clinic with her grandmother, was one of these students who had an interest in the job. “I really enjoyed it, I learned a lot and I’ve wanted to be a massage therapist for a long time,” she explained.

Other students discovered that they had no interest in the job they shadowed. Courtney O’Halloran, another seventh grader, enjoyed her experience at the BYU bookstore, but didn’t have an interest in perusing it as a career. “I had a lot of fun, but I want to be a chemist when I grow up.”

Lots of students at Springville Junior High participated in Job Shadow Day. Ms. Jarvis said that about 98% of her students were gone on Job Shadow Day.

For some students, finding and keeping a job isn’t something they’re particularly concerned about, seeing as their only in seventh grade. But as time goes by, it tends to speed up and the time flies by. Now is the time for students at Springville Junior High to be thinking about a career path they want to take.

One of the most popular classes among seventh graders at SJHS is Career Technical Education (CTE). Ms. Jarvis teaches the Introduction to Business section of CTE. Ms. Jarvis wanted to teach because in high school she was interested in teaching and the business field. She decided to teach business so she could combine the two.

Ms. Jarvis said, “I love teaching because I get to know the students; they are so funny and have great personalities.” Because she teaches also computers, she teaches information that they will use at school and at home, “It is so fun to see them take those skills and use them at home or in other classes.”

Hannah Thorn, a seventh grader, said, “She is super cute and nice; If you get this class you will love it.” Olivia James, also a seventh-grade student, said “She is so nice; she lets us talk, but not too loud.” According to Jehni McNeil, an eighth-grade student, she is always fun and she teaches well.

Besides teaching, Ms. Jarvis also enjoys horseback riding. Her family owns fifteen horses that they raise and train. They raise them to become barrel racing horses. In the summer she travels to two to four rodeos a week.

SJHS has a lot of hard working teachers. One of them is Mrs. Diane Bird, who teaches three classes: service learning, CTE, and sewing. She has been teaching here for one year and has loved it. Even though she is busy with school work she still has time for her family, pets and her big yard at home.

This year is Mrs. Bird’s fifth year teaching. Before coming to SJHS, she taught sewing, service learning, CTE, foods, child development and Interior Design at Provo High School. Before teaching, she helped with her husband’s business and has been busy raising four children.

Mrs. Bird may seem too busy, but she doesn’t let work stand in her way of doing things at home. She likes to cook, sew, hike and hang out with her kids. “My kids are my hobbies,” said Mrs. Bird. Mrs. Bird also likes to travel. She has been to places like Arizona, California, Hawaii, Canada and Europe. Her all-time favorite place to go is the Teton Mountains in Wyoming, and she loves the beach!

Students have nothing but good things to say about Mrs. Bird. Brittney Hooley, an eighth-grade student, said, “Mrs. Bird is a really good teacher. She takes time with you so you can understand what you are doing.” Another eighth grader, Laurelin Webb, said, “Mrs. Bird is a fun, easy-going teacher.”

Mrs. Linda Woodfield is the new CTE and Teen Living teacher at Springville Junior High. CTE is a seventh-grade class, and Mrs. Woodfield teaches the Family and Consumer Science part of the class. “I’m very passionate about the things I teach,” said Mrs. Woodfield. The Teen Living class studies individual development, communication skills, self-esteem, family relations, dating, teen pitfalls, teen pregnancy, and taking charge of your life.

Last year Mrs. Woodfield finished her student teaching at Springville High School, teaching Child Development and Needle Arts. Anenia Tuttle, a seventh grader at Springville Junior High, said, “Mrs. Woodfield is a fun teacher because she always has something fun to do!”

Mrs. Woodfield is new to teaching because she chose to spend her time raising her six children. All of her children attended Springville Junior and Springville High. Mrs. Woodfield’s favorite hobbies include sewing and quilting, crossword puzzles, gardening and food preservation. She also likes to learn foreign languages, especially Spanish.

Rebecca Elzinga, a seventh grader, said “I like cooking the most because we get to eat what we make!” Students agree Mrs. Woodfield is a very fun and great teacher.

Springville Junior High has been a very lucky school since 1992, because Mr. David Rencher has been a teacher here for eighteen years. He says he enjoys his job of teaching technology classes. No wonder, before he was a teacher, he said he wanted to be an architect and a carpenter, among other things. Mr. Rencher “has a good mind about technology,” according to Oscar Portillo, a former student of Mr. Rencher’s.

Mr. Rencher’s classes are part of a state program called Career and Technical Education (CTE). In CTE, students learn about different things they can do when they grow up and how they can do them. Mr. Rencher teaches about careers involving things like construction, architecture, design, and some other things, like film-making.

The CTE classes at Springville Junior High School are probably among some of the most enjoyable classes offered. Seventh graders certainly enjoy their CTE classes and look forward to them during the day.

The classes of CTE change around every 60 days, rather than on the semester. Students get the opportunity to do the three segments of CTE: Home Economics, Technology, and Careers. In CTE, students learn things about the world, about their home and raising children, and how to get a good career.

According to seventh-grader Stacy Stapel, her favorite part about CTE is that they get opportunities to do hands on activities. It gives students an opportunity to learn how to do real life things to help them lead a better life in the future.

“I’m excited to learn about new things!” said Hannah Bressler, a seventh grader at Springville Junior High. And who wouldn’t be? The whole class is about things that will help you lead a better life.

Ms. Josie Jarvis became a teacher because she didn’t want to be a person that did the same thing everyday. Ms. Jarvis teaches computer technology and computer business to the eighth and ninth graders and Career and Technical Education (CTE) to seventh graders. Her main focus for the seventh graders is on how to use computers.

Ms. Jarvis was born in Payson and grew up in Spanish Fork her whole life. Ms. Jarvis said, “I have a lot of really good life-long friends that grew up with me in Spanish Fork, and a lot of family lives there to.”

Ms. Jarvis went to Salt Lake Community College where she received her Associate Degree. She then went to Weber State University for a year. Then she went to Utah Valley University (UVU) and received her Bachelor’s Degree. She is currently going to Southern Utah University to get her Masters Degree.

Seth Daybell, a seventh grader, said, “I like her class. I like working on the computer, and working in books. The books are easy to read and understand. I like when we are done with our work and can practice typing.”

Weston King, an eight grader, said, “She rocks; it is easy to be in her class. She isn’t extremely strict. She is a nice teacher to have. She does fun things with her class.”

She teaches the Family and Consumer Science area, which includes child development, clothing and textiles, nutrition and food science. “Nutrition is probably my favorite area to teach, and I feel it is probably the most important,” she said, “If we are healthy we have a much better chance of being successful and happy.”

Mrs. Bird grew up in Mapleton, and went to Springville Junior High. Here she met some of her best friends, and, in her opinion, had a lot of fun.

When asked why she decided to teach, Mrs. Bird stated, “I had an excellent teacher in high school that taught Family and Consumer Science. She was enthusiastic and enjoyed her job. I thought she was the greatest, and I wanted to do exactly the same thing.”

Why would one want to teach CTE? For Mrs. Bird the reasons are clear: “I enjoy getting to know the students. I feel the subjects I teach can impact all of us.”

Please help us welcome Mrs. Bird to the staff at Springville Junior High.
