Awards Assembly at SJHS

Announcements for Parents, School Activities, Student Life May 17th, 2010

Kara Dunn
SJHS Staff Writer

With the end of the year just around the corner, students, teachers, and faculty members alike are excited for a nice long break before starting up again in August. But before summer vacation, students are to be recognized for their hard work, dedication, perseverance, and improvement in different areas.

On May 24, 2010, parents are invited to attend SJHS’s annual awards assembly for students to receive different awards in different areas for each ones improvement and success. The ninth grade assembly starts at 8:00, and goes until 9:10. The eight grade assembly is from 9:15 till 10:00, and seventh graders are from 10:05-10:50.

Because Springville Junior High is such a large school, rather then having the administration choose awards, teachers, who interact more with the students, choose awards that are given to each students.

Springville Junior High is honored to have such successful students and is looking forward for the opportunity to recognize these students and award them all with everything they deserve.

Students enjoyed learning about kangaroos from Grandpa Dutch.

On April 28, 2010, students in Ms. Tiffanie Miley’s seventh grade English class were all in shock when a kangaroo jumped into their classroom. Throughout the semester, Andalyn Hall, a student in Ms. Miley’s first period class, has told the class about her grandfather’s kangaroo.  Her grandfather and mom brought the kangaroo in to surprise Andalyn and the rest of the class to celebrate the end of state testing.

Andalyn’s grandfather, Grandpa Dutch, owns a farm in Springville where he raises animals. After his kangaroo is full grown, he will give the kangaroo to one of his friends who keep full grown kangaroos.

Andalyn was just as surprised as everyone else to see a kangaroo walk into their class room. “Andalyn’s face lit up, she was so surprised,” Whitley Hicken said.

“I was so excited when I got to present him to the class,” Andalyn explained.

The class not only got to see and pet the animal, but they also learned a lot about kangaroos. Burke Collings said, “We learned that they can grow up to be six feet tall.” The class also learned that kangaroos use their tail for a third leg and that they are a lot softer then they look.

Ms. Miley’s class was excited and eager to learn about this animal, and was grateful for the opportunity to learn hands on.

Student-Led Conferences to be held Thursday, April 29th

Announcements for Parents, School Activities, Student Life April 22nd, 2010

Springville Junior High School’s Student-Led Conferences will be held tonight from 3:30-8:30 pm.  The purpose of the Student-Led Conference is two-fold.  First, students will be actively involved in reflecting on their progress and accomplishments.  Second, the Student-Led Conferences provide an opportunity for students to improve communication skills and discuss their understanding of their own learning process.

Students will have the opportunity to present their parents with a collection of work and progress reports gathered from all classes.  Most importantly, the administration and teachers of SJHS hope students and parents will celebrate the completion of the portfolio and excellent work which has been done.

It is optional for parents to visit with any teachers, and since the students will be conducting their own conference with their parents, the teachers will be available to visit with parents if they have questions or concerns.  It is hoped that parents will come away from this experience with more knowledge and understanding of their child’s experience and performance at SJHS.

Mr. Booth’s ninth grade band class competed in a district festival on April 16, 2010, at Spanish Fork High School. The ninth grade band has been preparing for this festival since before Christmas and has worked hard to get to where they are today.

The band played three pieces of music: Appalachian Morning, Lost Mountain, and All Glory Told. These pieces of music were challenging, and difficult for the band to learn. They worked hard, and dedicated their band class to becoming better.

The ninth grade band will also be performing in a district festival at U.V.U on May fifth, where they will be performing the same songs.

Students at Springville Junior High School are considered very lucky to have the opportunities they do, by living here, in the United States. Other teens in the world aren’t as lucky to be able to go to school all through high school.

In an effort to help other teens in other places of the world, Springville Junior High is participating in fundraiser to help earn money for students around the world that aren’t as fortunate as others.

Yuda Bands are bracelets made by students in Guatemala that are then shipped to the US to be sold. Yuda Bands will be sold during lunch for seven dollars, or three for twenty, April 13th – 23rd. All the money that is raised is given to students in Guatemala to pay for their high school experience.

Springville Junior High is working hard to help other students benefit and receive the education that they deserve.

In Mrs. Bass’s ninth grade English classes, they have been reading “Mississippi Trial 1955,” by Chris Crowe. As part of their learning experience, Mrs. Bass’s classes invited Dr. Crowe, an English Education professor from BYU, to come and speak to them about his book and the history behind it.

The book is about the famous Mississippi Trial and a boy who lived during that time. Dr. Crowe spoke about the cause of the trial, the results, and how different society was back then from how it is today.

“I’m glad to meet new people who are reading my books,” Crowe said. Springville Junior High was grateful for the opportunity to hear from such a famous author and were able to connect the words on the page to the story that was told.

Every year, Springville Junior High School celebrates R.A.S.K. Week (Random Acts of Selfless Kindness). The purpose of this week is to encourage the students to perform service for others to form unity in the school.  The Service Learning class came up with different ideas to get students to get excited about helping others.  Each day, there’s a different theme to help students remember to help each other.

Starting on Monday, March 22, there were different activities going on at SJHS.  Monday was Sports Day, when students could dress up in their sports clothes and “Sport” Kindness, and there were organized sports outside during lunch.

Tuesday was Crazy Day.  Students dressed up in their craziest clothes, and could pay $1 to tape Mrs. Johnson, one of the vice principals, to the wall during lunch.

Wednesday was Movie Character Day, and students were encouraged to show their “character” by doing acts of kindness, and during lunch Pixar shorts were played in the auditorium.

Thursday was Retro Day. “Don’t make kindness a thing of the past” was the motto.  You could color with chalk outside during lunch.

Last of all, Friday was School Spirit Day.  Students showed their spirit by wearing school colors, red and blue, and singing karaoke in the lunchroom.

A sixth grade class from Brookside Elementary gets a tour from SJHS student council members Katie Bair and Mindy Stapel (back row, left side).  The administration (Mr. Darrel Rolfe, Mrs. Courtney Johnson and Mr. Dave Knudsen–back row) hopes that visiting the junior high will help the sixth graders feel more confident about changing schools next year.

Kara Dunn
SJHS Staff Writer

On March 2nd, 4th, and 5th, sixth graders from elementary schools all around Springville to spend a day at Springville Junior High, learning what it was going to be like next year.

The sixth graders went to an assembly where they are introduced to the faculty, their new counselor, some of their options for next year, and the way things work around Springville Junior High. After the assembly, the students were given a tour of the school and then ate lunch before going back to their elementary school.

Everyone at Springville Junior High got into helping the sixth graders feel welcomed and give advice on how to succeed. Some classes gave presentations during the assembly on what their class was like, and what activities they could participate in. The seventh grade English classes created survival guides that were handed out to the sixth graders, giving them advice on how they could succeed next year.

Kara Dunn
SJHS Staff Writer

Springville High School is hosting Color Guard tryouts for any students that will be attending the high school next year and are interested in joining the Color Guard team. Try outs will be April 12th, 13th, and 14th.

Color Guard is a dance team that not only consists of dancing, but also equipment work such as flags, rifles, and savors.

People wanting to try out will learn a small dance routine and learn the basics of flag work, and then have to perform in front of the Color Guard instructor.

Color Guard has two seasons. One is a summer season, and the other is a winter season.  During the summer season, the Color Guard team learns a dance routine that goes along with Springville High School’s marching band.  The Color Guard performs at parades, competitions, and at half time at football games.

During the winter season, the Color Guard team learns a routine with a song, and then competes against other guard teams all over Utah.

Color Guard is an opportunity to learn how to dance and learn how to manipulate different equipment; it is also a chance to get to know other color guard members from all around the state of Utah.
